My wife bought me this book for my birthday. It wasn't a hard decision for her - it was first on my wish list. I wondered about how much value such a small book could contain, but the reviews were so encouraging. I'm a relatively new grappler, but not new to martial arts. At 65 years of age, and a blue belt, I am most concerned with learning concepts that will promote a game that does not depend on youthful athleticism. I was not disappointed. This book was exactly what I needed in this point of developing my game. Instead of providing an encyclopedia of techniques, Professor Paulo gives solid principles that will make your techniques work. I already have a guard passing system I like; Now I can make that system work with much more efficiency and success!And it isn't just the book! When you log on to Professor's site, you receive videos that go hand-in-hand with each principle in the book: Many more videos than you would get with the usual DVD set or phone App. And he doesn't stop there! He keeps in contact with you on a regular basis, with tips and additional videos that aren't covered in the book. It feels like he's adopted you as a personal student. It feels great to have a coach that actually makes contact with you. This is one of the most important and satisfying investments I have made in my jiu-jisu journey.

The 21 Immutable principles was an eye opening look into everything I was NOT doing effectively in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. While not a long body of work, this text is probably the most in depth concept based tutorial I have read. The mystical "Invisible Jiu Jitsu" popularized by the great Rickson Gracie is given a great work of expansion and delves into so many details that will make your game go to the next level. All the little details and concepts Professor Guillobel teaches make you take a look and reflect on how you play your Jiu Jitsu Game. I was already doing a lot of the guard passing concepts but once I read the book and took a step back and realized I was missing some pretty vital points for success. I re-read this book all the time and even when I am rolling I hear his voice in my head almost in a coaching manner as I try to employ all the strategies and concepts during a roll. This book surely id not make me amazing at BJJ but it has improved my by leaps and bounds and progress on the mat and within yourself is what BJJ is all about. This book is must read for all BJJ enthusiasts and practitioners. As I mentioned earlier this book has so much "re-play" value because as you grow and as your game changes you begin to understand and execute these principles more effectively.

There are many books out there for the beginner. I myself am still a whitebelt with a lot of enthusiasm, I took many teachings of this book and applied it to my defensive positions and gained straight away. If you weren't into grappling sports before your venture into BJJ then it's very possible that what is BJJ 101 to a blue belt may in fact be mind boggling face palm moments for a white belt. It was worth the read and reading BJJ books has helped me to understand more of the art and how it works. I recommend purchasing other books as well due to all of them having different schools of thought to offer.

My game has changed forever, my, vision, mission and reasons for BJJ for this 47 year young guy is purposeful. I have reviewed all the support materials, the cost of this material is insignificant when secrets of the trade are being taught so simply.I recommend this book to everyone as a fundamental must have. Not a good book in my humble opinion. Maybe mention something important like in mount tilt someone's head to left or right to weaken them. Maybe talk about Structure or base or try to get someone body out of alignment before submitting them. Also, I didn't learn one basic concept at all so I was really disappointed. I really didn't like the book and wasted my money.

About the Author
Scott Atran is a Director of Research at the Institut Jean Nicod at the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique (C.N.R.S.) in Paris. He is also Adjunct Professor of Anthropology, Psychology, and Natural Resources and the Environment at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. A respected cognitive anthropologist and psychologist, his publications include Fondement de l'histoire naturelle, Cognitive Foundations of Natural History: Towards an Anthropology of Science, and Folk Biology. He has done long-term fieldwork in the Middle East and has also written and experimented extensively on the ways scientists and ordinary people categorize and reason about nature. He currently directs an international, multidisciplinary project on the natural history of the Lowland Maya.
