About the Author

R. A. MONTGOMERY attended Hopkins Grammar School, Williston-Northampton School and Williams College where he graduated in 1958. He pursued graduate studies in Religion and Economics at Yale and NYU. Montgomery was an adventurer all his life, climbing mountains in the Himalaya, skiing throughout Europe and scuba-diving wherever he could. His interested included education, macro-economics, geo-politics, mythology, history, mystery novels and music. He wrote his first interactive book, Journey Under the Sea, in 1976 and published it under the series name The Adventures of You. A few years later Bantam Books bought this book and gave Montgomery a contract for five more, to inaugurate their new children s publishing division. Bantam renamed the series Choose Your Own Adventure and a publishing phenomenon was born. The series has sold more than 260 million copies in over 40 languages. He was married to the writer Shannon Gilligan. Montgomery died in November 2014, only two months after his last book was published.

Bought this book for my grandchildren as they love to read anything written by R.A. Montgomery.

both my 9 and 7 year old kids love to read and reread this book

I bought this book because I like the creative idea of allowing children to choose their own ending. That being said, the story is not very interesting or engaging. I found it to be on the boring side. It wasn't very adventurous.

I just started reading my kids these CYOA Junior books. (I read the old version of this, not the new Chooseco, if there is any difference). Having read scores of these books, I can say, hands down, this is the WORST one I ever read.The main problem with this book is that you have to supply your own mystery. We are bringing our friend to this magical owl tree which we have previously discovered, but the book gives almost no backstory about this owl tree, and our previous experiences here are absolutely no help to us.The choices are terrible (before I could read the choices, my six-year old provided her own choice "Ask the other owl a question" which was the logical choice since the saw-whet owl was bee-essing us, but that was not an option. We could either ask the saw-whet owl a different question, or re-ask the same question. And the questions we ask in the story (total: two) are provided for us and are terrible questions, and the book tells us they are terrible questions, because we make our own future. Now, that's all well and good, but you FORCED us to ask these dumb questions!It is very sloppy, totally boring -- in the best ending (I guess) you get a ticket to the magical kingdom, and that is the end. (You have to make up your own magical kingdom.) Honestly, this books reads like a preview to get you to want to buy a different book.Also, I was annoyed when we are climbing a magical wall that keep growing, so we can't reach the top. If you pick "Keep climbing" you are magically on the ground again, and either fly or jump to the top of the wall... it really doesn't make sense.We still love CYOA books, but this one was NOT good AT ALL. It makes Tattoo of Death look like a masterpiece. And that is still grading on a curve, acknowledging that the Junior CYOA are necessarily much simpler. I would recommend "You Are Invisible" or "The Evil Wizard" (the previous two we read) which were HEAD & SHOULDERS above this entry.

About the Author
Giorgio Buttazzo is Full Professor of Computer Engineering at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa. He graduated in Electronic Engineering at the University of Pisa in 1985, received a Master in Computer Science at the University of Pennsylvania in 1987, and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa in 1991. From 1987 to 1988, he worked on active perception and real-time control at the G.R.A.S.P. Laboratory of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. From 1991 to 1998, he held a position of Assistant Professor at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa, where he founded and coordinated the RETIS Laboratory on real-time systems. From 1998 to 2005, he held a position of Associate Professor at the University of Pavia, where he directed the robotics laboratory of the Computer Science department. His main research interests include real-time operating systems, dynamic scheduling algorithms, quality of service control, multimedia systems, advanced robotics applications, and neural networks.

Respect for the environment, too, is another theme that runs through my service journalism. Not the trade-car-for-bicycle or eat-only-lettuce-fertilized-with-natural-gnats'-poo sort of radical stuff, but most definitely there are ways any member of humanity can minimize his or her impact on earth while still maintaining a lifestyle compatible with comfort and convenience. This is for sure a very good "do it yourself" book. There is no doubt that it is a "must have" for those building their own dock/jetty. The author, Max Burns, has written an excellent book on the basics of dock design and construction that is surprisingly comprehensive but still practical. It is one of the two "only" books I have ever seen on recreational/residential dock construction. I think the way the book was able to streamline and summarize the various technical bits and pieces, although being targeted at the beginner to intermediate designer/builder, does not stop it from being a very useful and informative book to most people. Each chapter is short and readable; the subject matter is directly applicable to real life situations and is not written in a typical textbook manner. I think Sections 2 and 3 on dock types and building provide a hard-to-find and up-to-date overview on various related issues. The graphs and drawings are easy to interpret, and I believe are essential to understanding the key points. Coming from a construction/environmental background I found the inserts/information boxes on the environmental impacts and construction considerations to be written in a way that is very easy to understand and quick to pick-up. Yes, this for sure a very good book to have on the subject of dock design and construction. It is also a model for writers to follow on how to simplify a technical subject, which in many instances can be gruesomely complex, to an easily "digestible" read so people from different walks of life can enjoy it in a practical way and put it to use.

This insult is not for the reader, but for the book; if you learned anything from this book , you have no business considering building a dock yourself. I already knew the difference between a screw and a nail and I'm pretty good at spotting the difference between wood and plastic, yet these are major points covered in this book. You will learn considerably more by simply walking along any waterfront and carefully observing those structures that stick out into the water.Seriously, it's not that this book is too basic, it's that this book doesn't adequately address any of the issues you'll need to face to actually design, submit for approval and construct even the most basic dock. It adequately warns against the dangers of incompetant contractors, but not incompetant authors.

If you are building a dock, or modifying an existing dock, this is a great book to have. The diagrams are very clear, the instructions for building docks are simple and clear, and there are many alternative ways described for building what you might need. This book, together with the web sites of manufacturers and sellers of docks and dock hardware give you all you need to set yourself up.

Basics, with many caveats for the beginner

"The Dock Manual" tells you everything you need to know about designing, building and maintaining a small residential dock. It is an extremely well written and enjoyable book to read and is loaded with beautiful line drawings and photographs.There are extensive sections on the different types of docks, materials, tools, hardware and building techniques. The section on connecting your dock to the shore was worth buying on its own! The section on designing your dock was short but there are pictures and drawings of various types of docks scattered throughout the book.I've gotten many "do it yourself" type of books from Amazon and I think "The Dock Manual" is one of the best! If you have a dock, are planning on building a dock or just dreaming of it then you will LOVE this book!

This comprehensive look at designing and building various types of docks is very helpful. It didn't address every question I had, but it sure came close. I recommend it as a great starting point for anyone planning a dock either DIY or with a contractor.

I purchased this title mostly for ideas about the design of a new dock for my house... Well, after skimming through, then reading it cover to cover, I found nothing.No, I was not expecting plans, or material lists, but some content would have been appreciated. I can't recommend this to anyone considering building a dock!
