Would love to see an updated index with more common symptoms/ailments. Warts & shingles would be good to add to the index

I think this is a good book to keep in your collection if you are interested in homeopathy. This particular book has the usual information on what to take for colds or toothaches and that sort of thing that you typically find in these type of books but also has more obscure and exotic things ranging from gunshot wounds to epidemics. It also has sections with recommended remedies for ailments common in certain occupations and hobbies. There is also a fairly in depth section on pregnancy and childbirth as well as organ remedies pertaining to problems with various organs. I showed this book to a friend who has been using homeopathy for decades and had never seen some of the things mentioned in this book. In fact I will probably buy another copy for my friend. Definitely a good book to have around the house.

I like this book very much - tried it out on my Kindle Touch and gave it a good skim before reluctantly returning it. It has a table of contents, but the VITAL sections "Ailments A to Z" and "Remedy Descriptions" have no subheadings at all! This means you have to know the names of the remedies (or the exact name used for the ailment) in order to search - or you have to flip through. Which makes it a good book for flipping through and learning more about homeopathy, but not so good for a quick reference in the Kindle format. There is an index - you have to go to "end" and then flip back a few pages to find it. This gives you page numbers to "go to" but they are not touch accessible. If the author updates this book with a better table of contents for quick reference, I will absolutely consider buying it again for the Kindle.Things I particularly liked in this book were the sections on Pregnancy and Birth; First Aid Remedies for Specific Occupations & Activities (there is some humor here); Economizing (makes sense); and Remedies for Your Home Kit. All very useful chapters. I am adding it to my maybe list for a paperback copy - my space is limited so would have preferred a Kindle copy with a better table of contents!

Although this provided some information re: Homeopathy and how to incorporate it into your life, it was not inclusive or detailed enough for me.

Alan Schmukler has written a most comprehensive, enlightening, and invaluable book that has aided me in too many ways to ever list. I have effectively used and recommended remedies for myself, my family, my friends, and even new acquaintances, all thanks to this cornucopia of wisdom and insight from one of homeopathy's Masters. Whether you are just beginning to explore the fascinating world of homeopathy, or a long time student interested in this Master's interpretations, you will be so inspired and so greatly educated by Alan Schmukler's Handbook!

This is such a well written book with lots of great information. Not only does Alan Schmukler give information for common illness, but he also goes into what to do in case there is and epidemic. As he mentions, these are strange times with diseases resisting antibiotics, terrorist attacks and so forth. I feel better prepared with this book and purchasing the remedies needed to have on hand in case something major happens and hospitals are too full or if I can't even get to a hospital... I'll know how to take care of me and my family from the simplest cold all the way to Anthrax. This is a must have book!

I frankly do not know why I tortured myself with finishing it. However, Fortune's Children, was a breath of fresh air after that. It is anything but boring and dry.This book breathes life into a fascinating sociological part of American history: the Gilded Age. Prior to reading this book, I really did not have an appreciation for this time in history. The extravagance and the opulence (before income tax existed!) that this book details is fascinating. The book delivers its message without being gossipy, but it also does not bore with dry and academic droll. The author has a wonderful grasp on his style, and walks the line between personal family history and historical account with wonderfully professional ability. At no point did I feel like I was reading a gossip tabloid (I am currently reading a bio by another author that feels that way and it feels cheap and sultry).In summary the book was extremely well written, captured my attention on every single page, and was one of my most favorite historical bio books of all time.

The Commodore is one of the most important capitalists this country has ever produced, and with the marriage of his great-granddaughter to the Duke of Marlborough, this book will make excellent reading for any fan of Downton Abbey.The author states that the fortune dissipated quickly because the Commodore was the first and only Vanderbilt who was obsessed with making money. The Vanderbilt men who followed were obsessed with keeping it. You need both to maintain those bank balances. Some-- like Alva Belmont Vanderbilt-- were obsessed with spending it to ram their way into New York's high society. Alva built some of the largest and most ostentatious homes ever to grace these shores, and the houses' interiors were even more lavish than their exteriors. Each of the author's ancestors is portrayed with wit and sorrow, which can often happen with the "advantage" of hindsight.This is an absorbing tale of greed, snobbery, and profligacy that kept me fascinated from first page to last. If this is your cup of tea, I urge you to pour yourself some.

Living close to Newport and the Mansions and having visited them many many times I was interested in the lives behind these fantastic houses. This book was extremely informative and easy to read. Some folks have commented that it was boring. I disagree, it wasn't at all and I never read these biography types of books. It was very interesting, it followed the generations down through the ages and explained exactly how they all squandered such a great fortune. Yes, most were an incredible bunch of snobs - its amazing how ridiculous they were and how they had to try to outdo each other, who they accepted into their "400" society, the rules of engagement, clothes of the day, fashion, "The Season", the trips to Paris, private yachts, Italian marble everywhere, marrying for money, many divorces - THUS the Gilded age, but truly they more or less lived in Gilded Cages and for the most part money didn't buy them all happiness but created unreasonable demands. A lot of historical information about the buildings of the first railroads. I wish the book had more photos; it has some. However, everytime a new Vanderbilt character was introduced in the book I simply searched them up on Yahoo. I do think its a shame that all of those beautiful, artistic mansions on 5th Avenue are gone though. I'm glad the Newport Preservation Society has saved the remaining mansions of the time in Newport. Ostentatious as they are, they are still a magnificent example of the architecture of the time and William Morris Hunt, et als, talents. This book tells of the gaining of the great wealth by Commodore Vanderbilt and what each one of his children and subsequent generations did with his money after his death, until, finally all was spent and there were no more Vanderbilt millionaires. I also enjoyed hearing about the "Gilded Age,"the mansions in Newport, R.I., where the "summer" cottages of the rich were. This book will not disappoint.

About the Author
Neduntheru Kannan was born in Neduntheru village, close to Kudamurutti and Kaveri rivers, in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, India, educated through the Sarasvati Ambal Elementary School of East Valuthoor, Board High School of Ayyampettai and later in Vivekananda college of Madras where he did post-graduate Mathematics. He taught Mathematics in Government Colleges in Madras and Mangalore for some time and then drifted into Central Government service in New Delhi much against his will. He pursued his interest in Sanskrit studies in New Delhi under Pandit Atma Ram, a staunch Arya Samajist, who introduced him into Nyaya, Mimamsa and Vyakarana, while Ananta Krishna Sastrigal of Noorani, Palghat led him into studies in Vedanta. It was only after retiring from service as Joint Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Finance and settling in Madras, that he was favoured with the fortune of doing Kalakshepam with stalwarts like Goshtipuram Swamy, Paiyambadi Chetlur Swamy, Purisai Swamy, Perukkaranai Swamy and Mannargudi Swamy. What he cherishes most is the added fortune of receiving the blessings of the Pontiffs of Sri Ahobila Matam, Paundarikapuram Srimad Andavan Ashramam, Srirangam Srimad Andavan Ashramam and Mysore Parakala Matam.

About the Author

Turuvekere Subrahmanya Shanmukha Dikshith, PhD, was responsible for the establishment of the Pesticide Toxicology Laboratory at Industrial Toxicology Research Centre, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India, Lucknow, India. He was director of the Toxicology Research Laboratory, VIMTA Labs Ltd., Hyderabad, India. He also worked as a consultant, Pharmacology Division, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad, India. Dr. Dikshith served on the committees and expert panels constituted by different ministries of the Government of India. As an expert committee member, he also served the Central Insecticides Board (CIB), Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine and Storage, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, India. He is a member of the World Health Organization Task Group on Environmental Health Criteria Documents and the International Program on Chemical Safety. Dr. Dikshith is the technical specialist for Standards Australia Quality Assurance Services (SAQAS), Australia, and Lloyd Register Quality Assurance Ltd. (LRQA), London, for the quality management of the laboratory and good laboratory practice. He is also the recipient of the Chandra Kanta Dandiya prize in pharmacology.

As a fellow of the World Health Organization, Dr. Dikshith has worked at the Institute of Comparative and Human Toxicology, Albany Medical College, Albany, New York, and also at the International Center of Environmental Safety, Holloman, New Mexico. He has worked in several laboratories in France, Germany, and Canada. Dr. Dikshith has edited Toxicology of Pesticides in Animals published by CRC Press, Boca Raton, Florida, and has authored a book chapter published by Plenum Press, New York. He has also authored several other books, including Safety Evaluation of Environmental Chemicals published by New Age International Publishers, India; Industrial Guide to Chemical and Drug Safety published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Hoboken, New Jersey; and Safe Use of Chemicals: A Practical Guide and Handbook of Chemicals and Safety published by CRC Press, Boca Raton, Florida.
