Gr 5-9-This adaptation of O'Reilly and Martin Dugard's Killing Kennedy (Holt, 2012) retains the adult version's brief chapters and "you are there" style. It opens with O'Reilly's memories of the day his high-school class learned of the events of November 22, 1963, and then briefly describes the backgrounds of the president and the assassin. Most of the book, however, follows the parallel paths of Kennedy and Oswald as they approach the fateful day in Dallas, describing the most important aspects of Kennedy's presidency and life, contrasting them with Oswald's radical beliefs, myriad failures, and growing isolation. O'Reilly discusses both men's personal lives but omits details of Kennedy's sexual escapades and Oswald's marriage found in the adult version. He gives an hour-by-hour account of the day and the assassination, and Oswald's capture and subsequent murder, and evaluates Kennedy's legacy. An afterword relates the post-assassination fates of major characters, and back matter provides primary-source documents, source information, and an overview of the Warren Commission's investigation. The well-captioned photos and maps that appear on almost every page are a major strength of the book. YA titles such as Wilborn Hampton's Kennedy Assassinated! (Candlewick, 1997) offer similar, detailed accounts of the assassination, but readers will find O'Reilly's readable style and juxtaposition of Kennedy's and Oswald's lives to be appealing. The popularity of the adult title will drive interest, but this book is strong enough to draw its own audience. An excellent choice for middle-school libraries.-Mary Mueller, Rolla Public Schools, MOα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. This riveting account of the horrific assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy is adapted from Bill O'Reilly's bestselling "Killing Kennedy." This fascinating, illustrated edition is designed for age 10 and over. The author chronicles a valuable, historical narrative of the tragedy that not only changed my generation, but the entire nation. Bill O'Reilly presents information on the shocking events leading to the assassination, the political crisis JFK was facing, and life of JFK and his family in the public eye. In addition, the author describes an angry drifter, known as Lee Harvey Oswald, who was taken into police custody while accused of the most notorious crime of the twentieth century. The prime suspect escapes, is captured, then shot dead, and I remember quite well watching the TV with my dad as Oswald fell to the ground. This horrifying event repeated itself on the News, as much as the chaos of the scene of JFK in the car, after the shooting. One of the worst memories planted in my mind was JFK's funeral, with his wife and two very young helpless children as they stood in silence, while the entire country mourned. One of my best memories of when JFK took office was looking forward to his brother visiting my school, and always viewing the passion JFK had for his children. Bill O'Reilly describes in detail a gripping, thrilling story of a day that marked history as it shed darkness into the world. In conclusion, he also highlights a brave leader, a hero, and a President who wanted to make the world a better place to live in. My dad never forgot Pearl Harbor, my daughters will never forget 9/11 and I remember November 22, 1963, as if it were yesterday. Despite all conspiracy theories, questions unanswered about Oswald's reason for action, or if he acted alone and mysterious findings in the investigations, the answers will never be found. However, the terrifying assassination of JFK and the consequences of this tragedy, along with changes that took place in that era, can never be forgotten. Most important, there is indeed a marked difference in presenting a thrilling historical story that one is an expert on researching, in comparison to living through those uneasy years of sadness, chaos and discontent. Insightful, captivating, and concise. Highly recommended!--Geraldine Ahearn(Author Geri Ahearn)
This is an excellent read. I'm a Baby Boomer and was alive when this event happened. The book was well researched and factual. It caught me up and I read it quickly. I highly recommend this book and a look at one of the darkest moments in the history of the USA.
Not too bad but being an assassination buff and having read hundreds of books on it this was mediocre. Not as good as Bill's other books by any stretch of the imagination!
Full of wonderfully photographs. Excellent book for children and seniors who have trouble reading. Such a sad event I our history. This book documents it well.
Similar to his other books, goes back in time as I thought it was going to focus on his last days in more detail.
Enjoyed this book so much! I love the way Bill O'Reilly writes, as if he was reading the book to you. Great information that provides you with a history lesson. I purchased many of this series.
Great for young readers - 6th-12th grade. Easy to comprehend. Straightforward with no fluff.
Very easy to read got through it in a day. Mostly everything we already new about, there were a few things that were mentioned in the book that were new info for me.
I have purchased 5 of Bill O''Rielly's books. They include all the facts related to subject matter, and are an excellent read.
